The Art of Discovery | The Desert
Qasr Al Sarab Desert Resort by Anantara
There are places that frame the desert. And then there are those that yield to it.
Set deep within the Liwa desert, Qasr Al Sarab does not attempt to soften its surroundings. It leans into scale, into silence, into the vastness that defines this landscape. The approach alone establishes intent: a gradual withdrawal from the city, replaced by an expanse of shifting dunes that recalibrate both pace and perspective.
Setting & Sense of Place
The architecture draws from traditional Arabian fortresses, grounded in form and material. It settles into the dunes, allowing the Empty Quarter to define the experience—expansive, elemental, and uninterrupted.
Light shapes the day. Mornings arrive softly, diffused across the sand; by evening, the dunes deepen in tone, their scale harder to read as the horizon stretches beyond view. Movement follows the landscape—between shaded courtyards, open terraces, and still water, each offering a different vantage point across Liwa’s expanse. It is in these transitions that the stay begins to settle, less defined by agenda and more by a quiet awareness of place.
The Stay
Rooms at Qasr Al Sarab are notable for their scale. The sense of space is immediate, allowing the day to unfold without constraint. By evening, the terrace becomes a natural point of pause, as the light shifts across the dunes.
Beds are designed to support a deeper rest, contributing to a slower start to the day. The layout is clear and well resolved, with seating and dressing areas positioned for ease of use.
Bathrooms are expansive and inward-facing, offering privacy and a strong sense of separation from the surrounding environment.
Accommodation ranges from rooms and suites within the main structure to private villas set apart, with a more secluded collection positioned beyond the resort. Across all categories, the experience remains consistent, with a clear emphasis on space, privacy and calm.
Dining
Dining at Qasr Al Sarab is structured with clarity and consistency. Under the direction of Culinary Director Giuseppe Lavarra, the offering reflects a more focused and assured approach, grounded in technique and disciplined execution.
AMANIE, introduced in 2025, marks the clearest expression of this direction. The Mediterranean-led menu is precise and well-balanced, with a lighter composition that brings a clear sense of refinement to the resort’s culinary offering.
At Suhail, the rooftop grill-led restaurant, the setting carries through the experience. As evening settles, the shift in light across the dunes becomes part of the table, extending the meal beyond the plate.
Al Waha maintains a broader international offering, delivered with consistency across the day.
Dining by Design remains the defining experience. Set within the dunes, it offers a level of seclusion and spatial clarity that is difficult to replicate. The table is placed with precision, and as the light fades, the landscape takes full precedence over the setting.
Wellness & Recovery
The spa at Qasr Al Sarab is structured around recovery, positioned as a quieter counterpoint within the resort. The transition from open desert light into enclosed, cooler interiors is immediate, marking a clear shift in experience.
The hammam is the defining element. Marble-clad and vaulted, it centres on the contrast between heat and cool, delivered with a steady and controlled progression.
Beyond treatments, recovery is embedded in the architecture itself. Shaded walkways, enclosed courtyards and naturally cooled interiors create consistent moments of pause throughout the day, reinforcing the overall sense of stillness that defines the stay.
The Pool & Landscape
Water at Qasr Al Sarab introduces a clear contrast within the landscape. The central pool is positioned with an open outlook, where water and sand meet at eye level, anchoring the space against the vastness of the surrounding dunes.
The adult-only infinity pool offers a quieter, more focused setting. Its edge aligns closely with the ridgelines, allowing the view to extend uninterrupted into the inter-dunal basin. The effect is immediate and absorbing, with little to compete for attention beyond the landscape itself.
Service is consistent and unobtrusive, maintaining the calm of the space without interruption.
Desert Encounters
Engagement with the landscape follows the conditions of the desert. Early morning and late afternoon shape the day, with guided treks and camel journeys offering a closer reading of the Liwa dunes.
Falconry and archery introduce a more traditional form of engagement, delivered with a clear respect for cultural context.
These experiences extend the stay beyond the resort, offering a more direct connection to the desert and its scale.
